About

Hello, I’m Frances King-Smith and I founded Ecology Works. We are an independent consultancy set up with the aim of marrying excellent standards of ecological survey and assessment with trusted, affable customer service.

I have nearly 20 years of experience navigating projects for a wide range of clients and industries. Whether working for householders or renewable energy firms; ‘bigger picture’ schemes to smaller developers, ensuring client objectives are met smoothly and effectively is of utmost personal importance. I am a Chartered Ecologist (CEcol) under the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), and hold a range of protected and notable species licences (bats, hazel dormouse, rare reptile and great crested newt). I am a Natural England Registered Consultant for bats, a full member of the International Union of Nature Conservation (IUCN) Species Survival Commission and a vetted member of their Otter Specialist Group.

Ecology Works will feed in-depth local and national policy insights into high-quality ecological reporting to support your planning application, providing clients with unrivalled support as they navigate ecology and planning.

We provide cost-effective and sustainable protected species and habitat advice and pragmatic solutions, from preliminary surveys right through to licensing and mitigation. Our client base encompasses homeowners, landowners, developers, architects, planners and district councils.

Nestled within the beautiful South Downs, we cover the South-east of England and can deliver surveys for all terrestrial ecology, including: bats, badgers, otters, water voles, hazel dormice, breeding birds, widespread and rare reptiles. We are passionate about what we do and have an enviable track record of exceeding expectations with our work and nurturing long-term client relationships.

We are also able to provide Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Assessments for planning and support other ecological consultancies with surveys and Bat Mitigation Class Licence (BMCL) work.

Our fees are highly competitive and we can access Natural England licensing via the low impact scheme, which saves time and money for our clients.
